The foundation for La Sagrada Familia Basilica was laid on 19 March 1882 under the supervision of architect Francisco de Paula del Villar. Gaudi joined the project in 1883 as Villar's assistant. When Villar retired in March 1883, Gaudi assumed full architectural responsibility and reformed the design with his own ideas. For the next 43 years, until his death in 1926, Gaudi lead the project. Construction continues today largely following Gaudi's design. The basilica, consecrated in 2010, is expected to be finished somewhere around 2028, approximately 100 years after Gaudi's death.
