Heritage

Henlow, Bedfordshire

The church of St Mary, The Virgin dates from the 11th or early 12th Century. John Tilley was baptized in this church on December 19, 1571. He and Joan Hurst were married here on September 20, 1596. Their fifth child, Elizabeth, the only one to survive, was baptized here on August 30, 1607. All three, along with John Howland and about 100 others, sailed for America in September 1620 aboard the Mayflower. John and Joan Tilley, along with half of the other passengers, died the first winter in Plimoth Colony. Elizabeth and John Howland survived and were married there in 1624. Elizabeth Howland was my tenth great grandmother.
