...a small residential town about 33 miles northwest of London. Although inhabited more or less continuously for at least 2,000 years, very little in the town proper today is older than the 19th Century. The church dates from the 13th Century, there are Roman ruins in the vicinity, but most of the town is comparatively modern; the look of Harpenden is the look of many affluent English suburban communities.
